It is the first Mission: Impossible movie to be partially filmed using IMAX cameras. It is the highest-grossing film in the Mission: Impossible series worldwide.

In Budapest to intercept a courier working for a person code-named “Cobalt”, IMF agent Trevor Hanaway is killed by assassin Sabine Moreau. Hanaway’s team leader, Jane Carter, and newly promoted field agent Benji Dunn extract Ethan Hunt and Hunt’s source Bogdan from a Moscow prison. Hunt is recruited to lead Carter and Dunn to infiltrate secret Moscow Kremlin archives and locate files identifying Cobalt. During the mission, someone broadcasts across the IMF frequency, alerting the Russians to Hunt’s team. Although Dunn and Carter escape, a bomb destroys the Kremlin, and Russian agent Sidorov arrests Hunt, suspecting him as part of the attack.

The IMF extracts Hunt from Moscow. The Russians have called the attack an undeclared act of war, and the US president activates “Ghost Protocol”, a black operation contingency that disavows the IMF. Hunt and his team are to take the blame for the attack, but will be allowed to escape from government custody in order to track down Cobalt. Before Hunt can escape, the IMF’s secretary is killed by Russian security forces led by Sidorov, leaving Hunt and intelligence analyst William Brandt to find their own way out. The team identifies Cobalt as Kurt Hendricks, a Swedish-born Russian nuclear strategist who plans to start a nuclear war. Hendricks bombed the Kremlin in order to acquire a Russian nuclear launch-control device; however, he now needs the activation codes from the Budapest courier in order to launch a nuclear missile at America.

The exchange between Moreau and Hendricks’s right-hand man, Wistrom, is due to take place at the Burj Khalifa in Dubai. There, Hunt’s team members separately convince Moreau and Wistrom that they have made the exchange with one another. However, Moreau identifies Brandt as an agent. While Hunt chases Wistrom—only to realize that Wistrom is actually Hendricks in disguise, escaping with the codes—Carter detains Moreau. Moreau attempts to kill the inexperienced Dunn, and Carter kicks her out a window to her death. Brandt accuses Carter of compromising the mission for revenge against Moreau, but Hunt accuses Brandt of keeping secrets from them, as he has displayed fighting skills atypical of an analyst. While Hunt seeks more information from Bogdan, Brandt admits he was assigned as security detail to Hunt and his wife Julia in Croatia. While Brandt was on patrol, Julia was killed by a Serbian hit squad, prompting Ethan to pursue and kill them before he was caught by the Russians and sent to prison.

Bogdan and his arms-dealer cousin inform Hunt that Hendricks will be in Mumbai. Hendricks facilitated the sale of a defunct Soviet military satellite to Indian telecommunications entrepreneur Brij Nath. The satellite could be used to transmit the order to fire a missile. While Brandt and Dunn infiltrate the server room to deactivate the satellite, Carter gets Nath to reveal the satellite override code. But Hendricks has anticipated Hunt’s plan and turns off Nath’s servers before sending a signal from a television broadcasting tower to a Russian nuclear submarine in the Pacific to fire at San Francisco. Hunt pursues Hendricks and the launch device while the other team-members attempt to bring the broadcast station back online. Hunt and Hendricks fight over the launch-control device before Hendricks jumps to his death with it to ensure the launch. Dunn kills Wistrom, allowing Brandt to restore power to the station and enabling Hunt to deactivate the missile, while the fatally wounded Hendricks witnesses the failure of his plan. Hunt is then confronted by Sidorov, who sees Hunt has stopped the missile, proving the IMF is innocent in the Kremlin bombing.

The team reconvenes weeks later in Seattle. Hunt introduces the team to longtime colleague Luther Stickell and then issues new assignments. Dunn and Carter accept, but Brandt refuses. Hunt reveals that Julia’s death was staged, as he knew he could not protect her, and used her death as a pretext to infiltrate the prison and get close to Bogdan, an IMF source on Hendricks. Relieved of guilt, Brandt accepts his mission while Hunt watches Julia from afar. She spots him, and they share a smile before he embarks on his next mission.

Jessie is from a conservative Malayali Nasrani Christian family from Alappuzha, Kerala, that lives upstairs. Sachin falls in love with Jessie the moment he meets her. Sachin tries to interact with Jessie, who is afraid of speaking to men around her strict father, and ends up angering Jessie. Unable to hide his feelings for her any longer, Sachin confesses his love for her, to which she does not respond. A few days later, Sachin learns from his sister that Jessie has gone to Kerala to visit her grandmother. He, along with Anay, ends up in Kerala to look for her. After several days, he finds her, apologises and she introduces him to her family in Kerala as her “classmate”. Jessie denies she has also any feelings for him, but agrees to be his friend. On the train journey back home, however, the two get closer and share a romantic heart-melting passionate kiss. Sachin is convinced Jessie loves him; the two meets several times and Jessie begins to admit that she also likes Sachin , but wants to refrain from any problems because she knows her father wouldn’t give her hand in marriage to a Hindu. Consequently, due to various misunderstandings between Jessie’s brother and Sachin , her parents learn of their supposed affair. They fix a match and schedule her wedding. The day arrives and midway through the ceremony, Jessie refuses to marry the groom, displeasing everyone in her family. Sachin , who had, without anyone’s knowledge, come to Kerala to witness the wedding is ecstatic and secretly visits Jessie at her home. It is then that Jessie admits she has indeed fallen in love with him. Sachin and Jessie continue to love each other without the knowledge of their parents.

At this point of time, Sachin goes to Goa on a 40-day shoot, where he gets rather busy. Meanwhile, the topic of Jessie’s marriage comes up again at her home when the guy whom she refused to marry earlier pays them a visit. Panicking, Jessie calls Sachin and tells him that she wants to elope with him. Sachin , since he is traveling through less than ideal places, tells Jessie to stay in mumbai for now, and that soon he would be back and they can discuss. Jessie stops taking Sachin ‘s calls and so he goes back one night to check on Jessie. He comes to know that Jessie has decided to break up, as the relationship is not peaceful due to her parents’ disapproval. She says she has agreed to get married to a boy of their choice. When Sachin pleads her not to do it, she tells him that a time had come when she was willing to elope, but the moment was gone. She doesn’t want Sachin to wait for her too long, as he has his dreams to fulfill. Sachin later comes to know that she is married and settled abroad.

Two years later, Sachin meets Samantha (Samantha Ruth Prabhu). She falls in love with him, but is rejected by Sachin who saying that he hasn’t yet gotten over Jessie. He then comes up with a script for his first film, which happens to be his very own love story. He calls upon an actor (Ashwin Kakumanu) as the film’s protagonist, Samantha as the female lead and Anay as the film’s cinematographer, and the film is eventually titled Jessie. While shooting for the film in Taj Mahal, he sees Jessie and she comes to speak with him. She admits that she is not married and is still in love with him, and he too says she is still in his heart. Sachin proposes yet again and they get married in the same day. Rahul Kapoor (Imran Khan) has always been on the road to perfection, as per the wishes of his over achieving father and socialite mother. However, life seems to have alternate plans for him when he suddenly loses his job as an architect in Vegas. Afraid that he has let his parents down, Rahul decides to hide the truth from his parents and find another job. The mental pressure breaking him down, he decides to go to a therapist, where he meets Riana Braganza (Kareena Kapoor), a quick-witted hairstylist, who is also there for therapy. A series of events lead Riana to believe he is stalking her for her ex-boyfriend, and she ends up taking his therapy file, beating him with it, and then making a dramatic exit. Later, she opens the file which reveals he is not a stalker but a 25 year old architect who was there for therapy, like her. Embarrassed, she calls him, apologizing for her behavior and wanting to meet him to return his file. They meet up, and since it is Christmas Eve but Rahul has no plans, she invites him to have a few drinks with her. Rahul is at first hesitant to go out with Riana, and even more hesitant to drink alcohol, but her claims that he is uptight change his mind and he stays to have drinks with her. A few drinks turn into a night of a lot of loosening up and craziness, as both of them are heavily intoxicated. The morning they after, however, they wake up to discover that they’ve gotten married. A horrified Rahul now has more than just his job loss to hide from his parents. They both decide to get it annulled as soon as possible and get an appointment from the court in ten days. Meanwhile, Riana, who is also unemployed and has not paid her rent, loses her house and an initially hesitant Rahul finally lets her stay with him till her problem gets resolved. During these few days they spend together, they get to know each other better, that Rahul was always interested in photography, and that Riana wanted to be a ballet dancer but couldn’t due to a childhood incident. Their friendship develops as Riana slowly pulls out the real Rahul hidden behind the compulsive, sad, uptight man he always used to be. They spend Riana’s birthday together, and she ends up gifting him a camera to pursue photography. As they grow closer, Rahul develops feelings for Riana, however she does not show any signs that she reciprocates them.

As New Year’s approaches, Riana has to fly back to India to her family, and comes up with the idea that Rahul should go with her. He disagrees initially, as his parents and Riana live in the same city, but succumbs to her argument when she mentions that he can “bunk school”, and that he doesn’t have to tell his parents anything. Riana and Rahul fly back to India, and he stays with her family, their friendship growing stronger with Rahul’s growing feelings for her. The next day, however, Riana takes him to visit her school, and amidst reflecting over past relationships she has had she takes him to the “kissing spot” she would come to as a school girl. Taking this as a hint, Rahul leans in to kiss Riana, who leans back and questions what he is doing. Realizing she does not feel the way he does, an angry Rahul leaves the school, only to almost run into a car revealed to be his mother’s. He then lies to his mother, telling her he is in India for a business research trip, and that Riana is a colleague. They proceed to have lunch with Rahul’s parents, where he webs a tale of intricate lies to avoid telling his father the truth. Things between Rahul and Riana are tense, as he takes the rejection as another addition to all the times he has felt this way in his life, especially since Riana was one person who accepted him for who he really was. He leaves Riana’s house and moves into his parents’, trying to tell his parents the truth, but once again feeling overpowered by his father. Finally, the next night, during a family dinner, he realizes how meaningless all the pretense he’s had to keep for all these years is and erupts in anger as he divulges the complete truth to his in-denial parents and their business partners. He expresses his unhappiness with his life, saying he’d rather just be himself than being pressured into becoming acceptable in the high-class society he belonged to, but receiving their lack of understanding, leaves telling them to enjoy their dinner. As he rushes back to Riana to apologize for his behavior, Riana explains that she is sorry too as she never intended him to fall in love with her while Rahul argues that her actions led him to believe that she had equal feelings for him. Riana says she loves him a lot, but values their friendship too much and does not want it to end up as another potential break up. After a night of reflection, and deep conversation, both decide to maintain their friendship.

The film ends with both returning back to Las Vegas, finalizing their annulment, and Rahul getting a new job as an architect, while keeping time out for photography and Riana. Both remain best friends, with an ending note from Rahul claiming that he is finally happy with his life, however he remains hopeful that one day he will convince Riana to go back to that chapel with him, but for now, this is just the beginning of their story.
